Trends and Challenges in Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality

Among the primary technology pillar of the 4th Industrial Revolution are Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR). The technology has already reached the consumer with the mature development of software and hardware. Although AR and VR are seen as technologies reserved for hardcore gamers, many have realized the significant potential in a wide range of industries and applying the technologies to everything from military to healthcare to manufacturing and more. It is said that life frequently mimics art. More accurately, science fiction is frequently imitated by technology. With the advancement of the software and hardware, the technology is now already reach to consumer and will be widely use not only as serious business but also for entertainment. Recently, more applications and contents developed for AR/VR across industry from training to marketing.
This talk will include trends, challenges and research gap in Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality’s ongoing worldwide development. Samples will be taken from research carried out at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Institute of Human Centered Engineering (iHumEn) and other renowned research centres worldwide. Specifically, the research and development work of in Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality conducted by our team will be highlighted.
